Great food and really good service, marred only by the niggle that they upped their prices in January by 2.5% "due to VAT"; but of course their prices alread INCLUDE VAT, so they're charging VAT on top of VAT!! The real increase should be 2% and lots of restaurants are doing it. Only a small amount, but that argument works both ways!!

Lovely, friendly village pub on the outskrts of Barnsley offering an exciting menu of rustic dishes served with a modern slant.
Wild Boar sausage on swede and potato puree or beetroot marinated salmon and prawn c***tail, set the scene for starters, with venison haunch in a green peppercorn sauce as a popular main course. Pheasant, partridge, sea bass, swordfish and steak are all available and despite the menu being relatively limited on choice, Jason Neilson has tried to provide something for everyone.
The layout of the pub enables managers to accommodate diners in a warm, attractive setting, whilst the traditional bar retains its parochiality and charm for those just wanting a pint! Bar meals are served from the same menu as the restaurant, enabling those who haven't booked to have at least a chance of trying the fayre!!
Spencer Arms has quickly develped a good reputation since it was refurbished, (although the toilets let the place down).
The inexpereience of the staff is something that will no doubt be overcome with time, and Spencers real test will be whether they can build upon the interest they have already generated.
