Samuel Joshua Cooper lived from 1830 to 1913, the son of a local colliery owner and linen manufacturer. In 1912 he purchased the old Holgate Grammar School in Church Street with the intention of creating an art gallery for the people of Barnsley.
In February 1913, just before his death, the Cooper Gallery Trust was established to administer the new gallery and Cooper's bequest of 275 paintings. The Trust's permanent collection is formed almost entirely from the gifts of four benefactors with deep affection for their home town; Cooper himself, Sir Michael Sadler, Thomas Fox and Roland Addy
