1:15pm, December 12 December 1866. A huge explosion was heard throughout Barnsley. Word spread quickly, ‘the Oaks has fired’.
The Oaks Disaster was the worst mining disaster in Victorian Britain and remains the worst mining disaster in English history. This year we remember all the men and boys killed on the 150th anniversary of the tragic accident.
The exhibition will focus on the human stories of the disaster. Who was involved, how did it affect families and communities and what was the legacy of the disaster.
